Mayor Bell needs to walk away, sit down, think long and hard before he makes reckless comments see below: You do not give thugs who are drug dealers a social status in any community.

Mayor makes appeal as gardai seek dashcam footage after latest violence,…..Mr Bell has just given the Drug Dealers of Drogheda and far afield a recognition that is contrary to the laws of this country.  These thugs should not be asked to sit anywhere and it is quite a contradiction what Bell is actually saying; firstly he states that he would enter dialogue with the leaders of these gangs – this defies logic and then on the other side of the coin he states that the Gardai are there to take these dealers down and an to get them before the courts and get Drogheda back to some type of normality for the people and the wider business community.  I don’t know if Mayor Bell is just naive or just plain stupid but reading below is a conundrum in itself and somebody needs to have a word in Bell’s ear and it should go like this:  You don’t give drug dealers and people who destroy young lives a platform because then you are giving them extra powers that they can tell their foot soldiers they are leaders in their own field.  Now let me explain this field:  MURDER, INTIMIDATION, THREATS, ARSON, AND TRYING TO DESTROY THE HEARTBEAT OF DROGHEDA TOWN. I would like to know what Commissioner Harris has to say about Bell’s comments or Chief Supt. Christy Mangan.

Mayor Paul Bell has said he will meet with those involved in the ongoing feud in the town in a bid to at least secure a ceasefire before someone is killed.

Following a latest gun attack and a series of petrol bomb incidents, the mayor feels the time has come for real dialogue before a life is lost.

‘We have to end this or at least create a platform for a ceasefire. All this is having a huge impact on our town and people are afraid that an innocent party in all of this will be killed. The time has come to talk,’ he stated.

Speaking exclusively to the Drogheda Independent this week, he added, ‘I am prepared to meet with the leadership of the groups involved or those nominated by them (groups) in a non judgemental frame of mind for the sole purpose of bringing an end to the violent activities which are terrorizing our communities and destroying the good name of our town and all it has to offer. The purpose is none other than that.

“My offer is made against the backdrop of listening to many elected civic leaders continually describing and making commentary on the latest violent incident which seems only to feed into a narrative which is entertaining the national media and damaging the reputation of our townm but not offering any solutions into how the feud may be stopped in the interests of the citizens impacted by all of this.’

He says that although the Gardai and the law are key players in the ongoing feud, he says we are all ‘duty bound’ to do everything possible to stop the ‘acts of violence.’

“The offer I have made may be rejected and maybe criticised by those not having a full understanding of the impact which this feud is having on the daily lives of our citizens in every location of our town. The offer to facilitate dialogue also does not negate the work of our Gardai and our duty to support them in their fight to confront the drug trade in our town and my determination to work with every agency and civic group to eradicate the trafficking of illegal drugs in our town”.

The statement from the mayor follows an incident last Thursday.

At approximately 7.50pm a number shots were fired in Elmwood Close, Termon Abbey at the driver of a silver VW Golf, injuring the driver. A short time later a male self-presented to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital suffering from non-life threatening gunshot wounds and was subsequently released from hospital.

Two cars were seen driving away from the scene, a Grey Peugeot 407 07C2620 and a Grey Honda Accord 05D13539.

At approximately 8.10pm a car, Grey Honda Accord, was reported on fire at Carstown railway bridge, Carstown, Termonfeckin. At approximately 8.35pm a car, Grey Peugeot 407, was reported on fire at Starinagh, Collon.

At approximately 11.40pm and 11.50pm two houses in the Moneymore area of Drogheda were attacked and criminal damage caused. No persons were injured.

Superintendent Andrew Watters has appealed for witnesses to contact Gardaí at Drogheda Garda station 041 9874200, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station with information.

They are seeking dashcam footage from people who may have been in Elmwood Close between 7-8pm to come forward, as well as motorists who were driving in that area or on local roads between Termon Abbey, Drogheda and Carstown.

Chief Superintendent Mangan has expressed his thanks to the wider community in the Drogheda area for their support and assistance over recent weeks which has reduced tensions within the Drogheda area. He said every effort is being made to prevent and detect these irresponsible criminal incidents occurring within a small group of individuals and continues to appeal to the wider community to come forward with any information which will assist An Garda Síochána in bringing the perpetrators to justice.

Fred concludes:

It is hard to add anything further to the comments of Mayor Bell but one would have to ask today how many people in high places in this country are Cocaine users.  Even as I write this Leo Varadkar has some serious questions to answer in relation to drug use according to the Irish Times and his comments are far from gone away and he will have to clarify his position urgently.  The Gardai are there to tackle organised crime across this country and I think that Mayor Bell’s comments above have undermined the role of the Gardai in relation to Gangland and Drug Dealers.
