Tusla social worker jailed over child pornography, court heard most Vile Porn.
An employee of the State’s child and family agency Tusla has been jailed after he admitted possessing child pornography. A court was told materials found in the possession of social worker Denis O’Donovan included hundreds of examples of “the most vile” type of child porn. Judge Sean O Donnabháin told Cork Circuit Criminal Court it was “worrying” that a Tusla employee possessed such materials. O’Donovan (34), who is no longer employed as a Tusla social worker, was jailed for 12 months after pleading guilty to the possession of 14 video files and almost 2,350 images. The defendant received a three-year prison sentence with the final two years suspended in light of his plea, remorse and co-operation. Tusla said yesterday that the revelations were “concerning”.
“Tusla took immediate action once notified of the seizure of materials,” an official said.
“It is very concerning to any organisation that an employee would act in such a way, and given the sensitive nature of the work that the agency does it is particularly concerning.
“However, the agency does not have control of the unknown actions or behaviours of its employees.”
Judge O Donnabháin heard that, of the images involved, 14 video files and 232 images were classified as category one – the most vile type of child pornography.
O’Donovan initially claimed he had downloaded the images in an effort on his part to personally understand sex offenders as part of his work.
Judge O Donnabháin said that this explanation was “patently a lie”. However, he said it had not impeded the Garda investigation.
The defendant pleaded guilty to a charge that, on March 9, 2017, at his home at Forest Ridge, Doughcloyne, Togher, Co Cork, he did knowingly possess child pornography.
Det Garda David Noonan of the Garda Protective Services Unit said all the video images were of the most serious type of child pornography.
Gardaí were first alerted to O’Donovan by the National Child Exploitation Co-ordination Centre.
When Inspector Noel Madden went to his address, the defendant initially denied any wrongdoing. Later, he made full admissions to gardaí.
“He said it started in his 20s. It escalated from looking at children under 17 naked,” Det Garda Noonan said.
O’Donovan’s marriage has broken down in the wake of the offences. The court was told that he had not had any contact with children in his Tusla role.
