Taoiseach Micheal Martin and Fianna Fail face accusations of bringing back ‘cute hoor politics’ to Dail

‘It has not been a good first week for the Government and the Taoiseach must think that himself’

Alan Kelly claims Fianna Fail have brought back “cute hoor politics” to the Dail.

The Labour leader was straight out of the blocks during Micheal Martin’s first Leaders’ Questions session as Taoiseach.

Mr Kelly rounded on the Fianna Fail party, accusing them of thinking they are above the law after recent controversies, including Minister Barry Cowen’s drink-driving charge.

Mr Kelly also took aim at Sinn Fein, his opposition rivals, in a clear effort to claim some of the ground held by SF leader, Mary Lou McDonald.

But it was Fianna Fail that was the main target for his stinging criticisms on the first full day back this year today.

Mr Kelly said in the Dail: “I must ask the Taoiseach now that Fianna Fail is back in government, are its public representatives above the law and public health advice?

“The Taoiseach comes from old Fianna Fail politics.

“It has not been a good first week for the Government and the Taoiseach must think that himself.

“The modus operandi looks to have returned to an old style of cute hoor politics and I am not sure how the Taoiseach’s colleagues in government will respond to that style.

“What kind of example does it give to the public when three senior Fianna Fail representatives have openly flouted the law and public health rules?”

He added: “On top of that, the leaders of Sinn Fein broke social distancing rules to attend an IRA funeral and rally in Belfast.

“That was the second time that members of Sinn Fein attended a funeral during the Covid-19 lockdown while everyone else had to respectfully stay at home while friends, neighbours and supporters were laid to rest.

“People might expect the practice of exceptionalism from Sinn Fein but the public may have thought that Fianna Fail had been humbled since it led the Government during the financial crash.

Fred may not agree with his Politics but there is in place the Good Friday Agreement 1998.  The Dail or Government could have shown more moral courage and acknowledge his efforts to bring about Peace laterally.  Bobby Storey RIP.  Condolences to his family and friends.
