Gemma O’Doherty arrested after calling Garda ‘gangster’ in live stream video

Former journalist Gemma O’Doherty has been arrested after she challenged Gardai in a live-streamed video, calling one Garda a ‘gangster’.

Ms O’Doherty, who has campaigned vociferously against the Government’s pandemic limitation restrictions and face mask regulations on the grounds of civil liberty, filmed Gardai as they attempted to remove two right-wing banners from a motorway footbridge.

At approximately 4pm on Friday, Gardai received a number of complaints alerting them to an incident on the N11 flyover footbridge at Kilmacanogue, Co Wicklow.

Gardai attended the scene and proceeded to remove two banners, one of which read ‘Masks Spread Germs’ while another read ‘No Forced Vaccines’, as Ms O’Doherty recorded their actions.

In a now viral video, Ms O’Doherty can be heard saying: ‘Look at this! Look at this! This is criminal damage.’

The former Irish Independent reporter can subsequently be heard telling one Garda: ‘How dare you? Look at this. This is a gangster.’

Ms O’Doherty can be heard asking one Garda for their ID number before accusing both Gardai of being ‘cowards and traitors to the Irish people’.

When Ms O’Doherty is asked for her own details, she can be heard saying: ‘You won’t be getting my name and address’.

A spokesperson for An Garda Siochana confirmed that investigations are ongoing after a woman in her 50s was arrested at the scene under the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, and was detained at Bray Garda Station.

Ms O’Doherty and her fellow former journalist John Water are facing hefty legal bills after their failed High Court case against the Government’s COVID-19 restrictions in May.

On June 4, Justice Charles Meehan ruled that the pair must pay the legal costs of the State respondents and the notice parties — the Dail, the Seanad and the Ceann Comhairle.
