Gangland killer ‘Fat’ Freddie Thompson will appeal his conviction for the murder of David ‘Dáithí’ Douglas, the Court of Appeal has heard.

Thompson (39), of Loreto Road, Maryland, Dublin 8, had pleaded not guilty to involvement in murder but was jailed for life at the Special Criminal Court in August 2018.

Mr Douglas was shot six times as he had lunch at the counter in his partner’s shop, Shoestown on Bridgefoot Street, Dublin 8, on July 1, 2016.

At the court yesterday morning, lawyers for Thompson said they were to represent him in his appeal but had yet to lodge grounds with the court in order to receive transcripts.

Sympathised

The three-judge court heard that Michael Finucane Solicitors will come on record for Thompson, who originally gave his notice of appeal by himself from prison.

Free legal aid was granted to Michael Finucane Solicitors in the matter, which will be listed to fix a date once grounds for appeal have been submitted.

The mobster was involved in organised crime since his late teens, and rose through the ranks to become a senior Kinahan cartel figure.

Delivering the verdict, Mr Justice Tony Hunt sympathised with Mr Douglas’s family, particularly his daughter, who saw the shooting.

He said that was a terrible thing for anyone.

The judge also commended the gardaí involved, saying the standard of the investigation into Mr Douglas’s “execution” was “second to none”.

The non-jury court heard that the 55-year-old victim was shot six times shortly after 4pm as he took a meal break at the counter in his partner’s shop, Shoestown.

A semi-automatic pistol with its serial number removed was found next to his head.

The judge said there was no doubt that Mr Douglas was murdered and that this was an execution which involved intricate advanced planning.

He pointed out that the prosecution did not suggest Thompson was the person who fired the shots, but that he was one of the people involved.

A Ford Fiesta driven by him was seen interacting with other vehicles and individuals involved in the plot on the morning before the shooting.

Thompson grew up in the Maryland area of Dublin’s south-inner city.
