Why have we not Learned anything from the past number of months in relation to our most Vulnerable in our Nursing Homes. These Elderly supported this country for years, paid their Taxes, and this is how they end their Lives. They need Respect and Dignity? Nursing Homes need State funding and Protection. These tragic deaths could have being Avoided, in this Laois Nursing Home?

Fourth resident at nursing home dies following COVID outbreak

A fourth resident at a Laois nursing home has sadly passed away following an outbreak of COVID-19 in the facility.

The resident passed away on Monday in Midland Regional Hospital after previously testing positive for the virus

The management staff of Kilminchy Lodge issued a statement expressing their sympathies and condolences with all family members and relative to those who have passed in recent days as a result of the virus.

They have also offered their Family Liason Officer to all affected families to provide support.

A statement from the nursing home read: ‘The nursing home continues to work closely with Public Health,The HSE, and HIQA.

‘We want to acknowledge and thank our hard-working staff who continue to provide selfless and tireless dedication in the care of our residents.

‘They constantly provide the highest standards of professional care, while also caring for our residents with the utmost of kindness and compassion.

‘We also want to acknowledge the medical support given by Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise. On Monday evening, Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan said at a public health briefing that ‘it simply isn’t going to be possible’ to protect nursing homes from COVID outbreaks if the current transmission levels remain the same.

There is little point in us doing everything that we possibly can within a nursing home in a context when outside the nursing home we have widespread community transmission — we simply have to

address that.
