Towards the end of his interview with Ms Justice Susan Denham, Mr Justice Séamus Woulfe suggested they “go off transcript” for a moment. Appointed to the Supreme Court in July, he had been given a list of possible assignments starting in the first or second week in October.

“I totally appreciate you taking on this task in retirement with lots of other nicer things to do,” he said to the retired Ms Justice Denham, who was asked by the Supreme Court to review his attendance at the now infamous Oireachtas Golf Society dinner, “but the first day of term is Monday, October 5, and it would be very important for me to have this behind me and be back fully at work with my colleagues on Monday, October 5.”

This weekend, the prospect of Mr Justice Woulfe’s return to work remains as uncertain now as it did at the height of the controversy over his attendance at the golf dinner.
