The longtime lover of former FAI boss John Delaney told how she dumped him because she couldn’t live with his ego any more.
Emma English decided to pack her bags and walk out on the globe-trotting football boss a year before his empire came tumbling down around him.
Speaking publicly for the first time about the end of the five-year romance, she told the Irish Mirror: “My life with John was far from lavish. Whatever money he spent on his FAI credit card was not on me.
“I was more like Cinderella, I spent most of my time looking after my own kids and running around in tracksuits.
“Whatever money he earned, he didn’t give it to me.
“I bought most of my clothes in Dunnes and Penneys, there were no Versace dresses or Gucci handbags.”
The former model told how she was by 52-year-old Delaney’s side as he rose up the corporate sports ladder.
She revealed: “I am lucky I spent a lot of my working life in fashion so I had a good eye for style and, no matter where we went, always made sure I looked a million dollars.
“Yes I helped him climb up the UEFA ladder and went to various meetings with him staying in the same hotel room.
“But there was no money spent on me in exotic spas, I can tell you that.
“My life with him was very simple and normal. Yes, John paid for food and fuel but that was it.
“I bought all my own clothes, not the FAI, and I feel it is really important the public know that.”
Since the couple split up more than two years ago they have only spoken a handful of times, including after the shocking death of Emma’s 21 year-old daughter Amy in a car accident last June.© INPHO/James Crombie FAI Executive Vice President John Delaney and Emma English
She said: “John had nothing to do with Amy, she wasn’t part of his life.
“To be perfectly honest I am sick to the teeth of hearing about John Delaney, he has absolutely nothing to do with my life anymore.”
Emma didn’t watch the two documentaries about his rise and fall as chief executive officer of the FAI and said she couldn’t care less.
She added: “It really doesn’t bother me if I never hear his name again.
“I know he is under investigation for his time in charge of the FAI but all that has nothing to do
“As far as John is concerned, he is the victim and the whole world is out to get him.
“I can’t say any more than that and I know he is making a new life for himself in England.”
Emma said she fell head over heels in love with the smooth-talking executive when she met him at an event in Citywest in 2014.
It was love at first sight for both of them and they were living together within no time. They got engaged in New York in 2017.
The former model became an overnight celebrity, being photographed with Delaney in the VIP box at Ireland home matches and kissing each other in public like schoolkids.
She added she found all the people she met around the country in the FAI and football community very decent and friendly.
However, in their last few months together their relationship changed and Emma decided she’d had enough.
She revealed: “It was very hard to do because I did love him but I literally decided one morning I’ve had enough of this and I am out of here.
“I couldn’t handle his ego any more so I just packed my bags and left and that was the end of it.”
The death of her daughter has broken Emma’s heart but she has to remain strong for her other three children.
They are now the priority in her life and she also has a new job which she loves.
She said: “As far as I am concerned, John Delaney has nothing to do with me. Two years have passed since we split and I have moved on.”
