Leo Varadkar recommended Golfgate judge Seamus Woulfe for the Supreme Court to Helen McEntee, it has been revealed.

The Tanaiste offered a clear preference when he told her Mr Woulfe would “make a good judge”.

He did not comment on any others in the running for the job.

The revelation came during a bruising session in the Dail where the Opposition piled the pressure on Minister for Justice, Ms McEntee, over the appointment.

In an intense to-and-fro, the leaders from across the House lashed the Government with allegations of “cronyism” and “arrogance”.

However, after two hours Ms McEntee emerged relatively unscathed, despite repeated allegations of foul play from the Opposition.

It was confirmed that Mr Varadkar, shortly after becoming Tanaiste, told the newly-promoted Minister for Justice that the ex-Attorney General would “make a good judge”.

Ms McEntee told the Dail this conversation took place in the first few days after she took up her new role on June 28.

Mr Varadkar only spoke up for Mr Woulfe and did not say anything to her about another five people who had thrown their hats in to the ring for the plum €220,000-a-year gig.

Mr Woulfe was the only name brought to Cabinet by Ms McEntee and he was appointed a Supreme Court judge by the Government on July 23. He was one of the attendees at the infamous Oireachtas Golf Society dinner in Clifden, Co Galway, in August.

Following that incident, Chief Justice Frank Clarke has said he believes Mr Woulfe should resign. However, he has refused.

The revelation that Mr Varadkar intervened and gave the nod to Mr Woulfe for the judge job confirmed what most sources in politics strongly suspected.

But the admission in the Dail during the special question and answers session did not reveal there was anything officially wrong with the appointment – and there was nothing illegal about it.

It didn’t stop the Opposition from giving Ms McEntee a political lashing. Sinn Fein Cavan/Monaghan TD Matt Carthy said the evidence now proved “it was a done deal” because Mr Woulfe “was one of Leo’s cronies”.Exact location of 335 new virus cases as number of counties see worrying jump

He added: “Fine Gael doesn’t do accountability… Fine Gael does arrogance, in spades.”

Independent TD for Tipperary, Mattie McGrath, compared trying to land a blow on Ms McEntee to being on the famous music programme Ceili House.

He said: “I feel like I’m going around the house, and mind the dresser.”

Ms McEntee defended her handling of the process, saying: “It is a solemn duty on the part of the Minister for Justice to propose to Cabinet someone who, in the opinion of the Minister, is the best person for the particular judicial vacancy. The Government then decides.

“That is exactly what has happened in this case.”
