The man, who is aged in his 80s, was at his home on Gilbert Road in the Tenters in Dublin 8 when the men broke in at approximately 6.40am.

Gardai confirmed that no items or cash were taken from the house.

There was a large Garda presence outside the house on Gilbert Road after the alarm was raised.

Extra.ie understands that one Garda car had been present at the house earlier on Thursday morning, before more cars arrived along with a Garda van.

Officers were still at the house on Thursday evening as investigations continued.

A man, who is aged in his 40s, was arrested later in the morning on suspicion of public order offences, which the force said were related to the aggravated burglary incident.

The burglary is the second serious burglary to happen in the Tenters area in the last number of weeks, after a woman and man were hospitalised following a burglary at Merton Park involving two armed men on November 21.

A Garda spokesperson told Extra.ie: ‘Gardai received report of an incident of aggravated burglary that occurred at a house on Gilbert Road, Dublin 8, this morning at approximately 6:40am, 10th December 2020.a car parked in front of a sign: During the course of the aggravated burglary, the man was injured, but his injuries are not life-threatening. ‘It was reported to Gardaí that two men broke into the house. During the course of this incident a man in his 80’s sustained non-life threatening injuries and was taken to hospital to be treated.

‘No items or cash were taken from the house. Enquiries are ongoing.

‘In a related incident later this morning, a male in his 40’s was arrested on public order offences and conveyed to Kevin Street Garda Station. He is scheduled to appear before the CCJ on 4th January 2021.
