Mr Gibney served as an Olympic swimming coach in Dublin during the 1980s and 1990s, but he stepped back from the sport following a host of allegations of sexual abuse levelled against him by both male and female swimmers.

Gary O’Toole, one of Mr Gibney’s most successful swimming pupils, was the initial whistle-blower against his former coach, having communicated with other alleged victims.a man wearing glasses: Gardai are investigating allegations of historic sexual abuse levelled against former swimming coach George Gibney. A case was taken against Mr Gibney in Ireland, but the prosecution failed due in part to the time that had elapsed since the alleged incidents of abuse.

Mr Gibney subsequently left Ireland.

Over the past few months, BBC Sounds and Second Captains has broadcast a podcast series entitled Where is George Gibney?, which saw many of Mr Gibney’s alleged victims coming forward to deliver harrowing testimonies about their experiences.a close up of a helmet: Assistant Commissioner John O’Driscoll has confirmed that An Garda Siochana is currently investigating the allegations of historic sexual abuse levelled against Mr Gibney.
