Six residents die as large COVID-19 outbreak ‘devastates’ nursing home

 January 2021

A Laois nursing home has been left devastated following a COVID-19 outbreak in their facility that took six lives.

The large outbreak occurred at Droimnin Nursing Home in Stradbally, Co Laois, in the last week.

Some 49 residents have tested positive for the virus in the 101 bed facility.

In addition to this, 33 staff members have also contracted the virus. Typically, the nursing home employs 75 people.

Speaking to RTE’s Morning Ireland, Gearoid Brennan, CEO of Brookhaven Health Group, said that the deaths at Droimnin Nursing Home have ‘devastated’ the local community.

He explained that residents who have not tested positive for the virus have now been separated from the infected cohort.

‘It is a huge loss,’ Mr Brennan said.

‘It has been devastating for everyone on the staff who have tirelessly and who have developed very close relationships with residents whom they have grown to love.

‘To the whole community of Stradbally, it has been a devastating blow.

‘I want to give reassurances to everybody that we are working around the clock doing everything possible for the group and supporting our team in Droimnin Nursing Home to ensure that all of our residents make sure to be protected.

‘People who are not positive are being isolated into separate groups and they are being cared for by seperate staff who do not cross over either of a medical nature or a household nature.’

Mr Brennan explained that some staff members are now living on the nursing home’s grounds to ensure that they do not have to reenter the community.

There is now agency and HSE staff working in the nursing home to ensure there is sufficient care for the residents.

This is the first outbreak of COVID-19 in the Laois nursing home.  The CEO confirmed that there had been no COVID-19 cases linked to any of Brookhaven’s five nursing homes.

COVID-19 vaccines were due to get underway in the nursing home next week but have now been postponed due to the outbreak.

Mr Brennan said that while they do not know how COVID-19 got into the nursing home, it is presumed that it was brought in through the community.
