Crime boss Daniel Kinahan is still deeply involved in professional boxing, a new BBC documentary is believed to claim.

An hour-long Panorama programme – Boxing And The Mob – is understood to allege how some in the sport are working with the cartel boss.

The Irish drug lord is allegedly involved behind the scenes in setting up the biggest world title fight for years between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua.

The all-British bout for the heavyweight title of the world has a €221million price tag.

An agreement on the fight is expected to be signed in the coming weeks but there is no confirmation yet who is putting up the cash.

However, because of Covid-19 restrictions it is likely to be held outside the UK and possibly in the United Arab Emirates where Kinahan lives.

Daniel, 43, took over as head of the crime family from his father Christy five years ago, and resides in a large house outside Dubai.

Kinahan has had close ties with second generation Irishman Fury who is managed by US promoter Bob Arum.

Last summer the boxer publicly acknowledged Daniel’s attempts to get the Joshua fight off the ground and praised him for his efforts.

But it led to a backlash in the Dail, with Leo Varadkar calling out Kinahan and demanding the sport of boxing have nothing to do with him.

The Criminal Assets Bureau claimed in the High Court that Kinahan, even though he had never been convicted, controlled and managed the operations of the family crime syndicate in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and South America.

Interpol regarded them as the biggest cocaine importers to Europe.

The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs also made ministerial contact with the UAE demanding they take action against Kinahan and to ban him from the sport.

He resigned from a boxing promotions firm in which he was involved with some Arab business people.

But the programme, which is expected to be aired next Monday night is believed to allege he is still involved.

A source confirmed they are in contact with many in the fight business and is “very much out there”.

Much of the filming was done in the Marbella area of Spain over the past few months.

The Kinahan gang were encamped there for years until their feud with the rival Hutch family kicked off in 2015, which so far has left 18 people dead.
