This is a National Scandal, and Bluffer Darragh O Brien has no Shame at all, he makes the Tory Boy Eoghan Murphy look Good. The Homeless should be any Governments Top Priority in a Pandemic, along with the Nursing Homes. FF have Lost their Core Values a long time ago but worse is that they have failed to learn from their vast experience of travesties.

Record 79 homeless people died last year in Dublin alone

28/01/2021

A record 79 homeless people died last year in Dublin alone, a Dublin Region Homeless Executive (DRHE) report due to be presented to the Housing Committee tomorrow shows.

It comes as Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien admitted that only 400 affordable rental homes will be delivered this year despite promising 10,000 affordable housing units each year in Government.

The report, seen by Extra.ie, shows that a record 79 homeless people died in Dublin in 2020 – tragically, up 30 deaths compared to the previous year.

However, the DRHE report also shows there has been a decrease of 446 families in emergency accommodation since the start of last year to the end, with 755 families in emergency accommodation at the end of December.

Of the 79 that died, 44 had been in emergency accommodation, 27 had been in long-term supported tenancies and eight died while sleeping rough – five of which were not known to the homeless services.

CEO of Inner-City Helping Homeless and Councillor Anthony Flynn confirmed that the 79 figure was a record for Dublin and added that the national numbers are probably in the hundreds.

‘The bigger picture needs to be taken into account. The figures that we have are only Dublin-based. We haven’t got Cork, we haven’t got Limerick… These figures are up into the hundreds.’

‘If you were in any other social setting across this country, whether it be the hospital, Tusla, there would be an investigation into each death and a report on that investigation.’

‘Homeless services is the only setting where that is not happening,’ Mr Flynn told Extra.ie.

After a robust exchange between Minister O’Brien and his Sinn Fein counterpart, the Fianna Fail deputy revealed that only 400 affordable rental homes will be delivered for all of 2021 despite promising 50,000 affordable rental and purchase housing units over the life-time of the Government.

After Deputy Ó Broin questioned the Minister on the matter, Mr O’Brien told the Dáil: ‘The Deputy raises those questions while we are in the middle of a construction shutdown due to a pandemic.’

‘A total of 400 affordable rental homes and a national affordable rental scheme will be launched this year. There will be 400 homes tenanted this year.’

‘In the coming couple of weeks, if not in the next week, we will be announcing the specific areas where the homes will be delivered. We have put out the call on that,’ added the Minister.

Mr Ó Broin estimates that the maximum total affordable rental and purchase homes the Government will deliver this year is 550 – just over a hundredth of what the Housing Minister’s promised over the lifetime of the Government.

My estimation is, at the very most, you could have up to 450 affordable rentals and you may have 100 affordable purchases. But, we still don’t know the rent or the sale price of any of those yet so we still don’t know how affordable they will be.’

‘The reason I got so frustrated with him during the debate, all I wanted from him was to give me the figure of how many affordable homes to rent or buy will be delivered this year.’

‘The straight answer is he doesn’t know. And he doesn’t because there are no targets. If the total amount is 450 affordable rentals and 100 or so affordable purchases, that simply shows the Government is not taking the housing crisis seriously,’ added Mr Ó Broin.
