A lavish wedding with at least 12 people in the bridal party alone sparked anger over a breach of Covid guidelines.

Footage showed a bride and groom arriving at St John’s Church in Tralee, Co Kerry in a horsedrawn carriage on Friday.

The young Traveller couple were followed by four bridesmaids, a page boy and page girl and four groomsmen.

Only six guests are allowed at weddings under level five restrictions.

The newlyweds, believed to be in their teens, travelled in an ornate horse-drawn carriage followed by two stretch limos.

Parish Priest Fr Tadhg Fitzgerald said they were very strict about the guidelines and apologised for the over attendance, which he said was not planned.

He told the Irish Sunday Mirror: “The person that did the wedding absolutely emphasised that there’s only six allowed.

“At some stage towards the end of the wedding somebody opened a side door and let a few people in.

“It’s disappointing, it’s hurtful on one level, sometimes some people don’t take personal responsibility.”

Martin Collins, co-director of Pavee Point Traveller and Roma Centre, said: “Pavee Point has been really consistent and very clear since the onset of the pandemic that all large gatherings, funerals, weddings, engagements, birthdays, anniversaries, all of those events need to be put on hold.

“When this started last March I did a social media posting for Pavee Point advising travellers to take precautions.

“I’m pleading with Travellers to avoid large gatherings and keep their two metre distance, wash their hands and wear their facemask.

“The vast majority of Travellers are obeying the guidelines. But there is a significant minority in our community who are not, we need to get the message to them.

We have to put this in context, there are many many people in the settled community not observing the guidelines either.Travellers have said to me you have High Court judges and Government ministers breaching the guidelines and I say don’t allow their stupid actions to justify you behaving in a similar way.”

Diocesan guidelines state weddings are restricted to no more than six people, excluding the priest and the couple getting married.

Photographers and singers are also excluded from the total number.

A Garda spokesperson said potential breaches of Covid regulations are investigated and where appropriate fixed charge notices are issued, and a fil prepared for the DPP.
