Fury’s silence over Kinahan ‘damning’ as boxer under pressure to sever ties

Boxer Tyson Fury’s silence over his controversial adviser    Daniel Kinahan  was branded “deafening and damning” last night amid calls for  Kinahan to be blackballed from boxing.

Fury’s failure to come clean  about whether Kinahan continued to have any input into his career was condemned after the alleged gang boss admitted he was still advising “countless fighters” following an investigation into his involvement in the sport.

Fine Gael TD Neale Richmond, one one of Kinahan’s fiercest critics, s aid of Fury: “His silence is both deafening and damning.”

A senior figure in boxing added of the World Boxing Council heavyweight champion: “Fury’s going to be under a lot of pressure now.”

It was revealed in June that Fury would no longer be represented by Kinahan in negotiations over his planned fight with Anthony Joshua for the undisputed heavyweight championship of the world.

That was after Kinahan’s involvement in what would be the biggest bout in British boxing history provoked extraordinary outrage on both sides of the Irish Sea.

It was also announced last summer that the 43-year-old, who was described in the Irish High Court at the leader of the Kinahan organised crime group, would step away from the sport entirely, but he has now admitted an ongoing involvement.

Mr Richmond said: “It’s more important now than ever that boxing at any level – amateur and professional – completely blackballs Daniel Kinahan from any aspect of operations, official or unofficial.

“Even since the announcement of Fury-Joshua last year, we’ve seen more and more members of the Kinahan cartel sentenced to jail terms, including a number in the UK. The protestations that he had been removed from the sport were viewed very cynically last year. And I think that cynicism was justified.

“It now requires double, if not triple, efforts from the TV companies, the promoters, the sponsors, the administrators and the adjudicators of boxing at every level. They have to be able to prove he has no involvement, because ignorance is no longer an excuse.”

Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, said Kinahan had not been involved in negotiations for the Fury fight since last summer.

He added: “Regarding Joshua-Fury, we will deal with the representatives nominated by Team Fury. And, as such, at the moment, that is Bob Arum. Contracts were sent to him last week.”

In a statement issued to the Irish Independent on behalf of Kinahan last weekend, he said he has no criminal convictions and strongly denied being involved in organised crime.
