Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald has given Minister for Finance, Paschal Donohoe, back over €10,000.

The leader of the opposition, who has seen her party grow to compete with the big two of Irish politics, in Fianna Fail & Fine Gael, following last year’s General Election, has joined fellow party members in returning any pay increases paid out to TDs since 2017.

In a statement on Twitter, Ms McDonald said ‘I have not taken a pay increase of €10,200. This is a time of crisis. Workers and families are struggling. More money for TDs is just wrong.’https://platform.twitter.com/embed/Tweet.html?dnt=false&embedId=twitter-widget-0&frame=false&hideCard=false&hideThread=false&id=1360583082215145477&lang=en&origin=https%3A%2F%2Fextra.ie%2F2021%2F02%2F13%2Fnews%2Fpolitics%2Fmary-lou-gives-over-e10k-back-to-minister-for-finance&theme=light&widgetsVersion=889aa01%3A1612811843556&width=550px

The move follows that of fellow Sinn Fein party member, David Cullinane who earlier in the week tweeted ‘I signed a waiver form to gift all pay increases paid to TD’s from 1st April 2017 to the end of this year back to the taxpayer. The amount returned is €10,203,70. TD’s get paid enough. Pay increases for TD’s while Student Nurses & Midwives are still waiting to be paid is unjust!’

The tweets will undoubtedly help to increase the support base for the party who will be looking to get into power for the first time in the Republic of Ireland when this government finishes its term.https://platform.twitter.com/embed/Tweet.html?dnt=false&embedId=twitter-widget-1&frame=false&hideCard=false&hideThread=false&id=1359138425149009927&lang=en&origin=https%3A%2F%2Fextra.ie%2F2021%2F02%2F13%2Fnews%2Fpolitics%2Fmary-lou-gives-over-e10k-back-to-minister-for-finance&theme=light&widgetsVersion=889aa01%3A1612811843556&width=550px

Reports suggesting the leading opposition party will aim to add between 25 – 30 extra candidates for the next election shows the party’s intentions to gain control over the electorate next time around.Sinn Fein president Mary Lou McDonald speaks at a public meeting Liberty Hall in Dublin, Ireland February 25, 2020. With many unknown candidates, and even some failed local politicians, getting seats in this Dail, Election 2020, while an overwhelming success, was also seen as a missed opportunity for the party with feet in both the north and south of the island.
