Interim pathology reports identified two fatal wounds to vital organs as the cause of death. George, who suffered mental health problems, had been involved in an incident at a shop in nearby Hartstown, where he allegedly attacked a shop assistant while brandishing a knife, though did not stab the assistant. A second, verbal incident was reported at a nearby post office.

George’s father, speaking for the first time about the killing of his son, said that the family needs ‘an independent and open inquiry’ because they are ‘less than happy’ with the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC). Mr Nkencho said: ‘The family was told by Gsoc that the garda that killed George, and all other gardaí that were involved, more than 10 of them, were not suspended but were still actively working’.

He added that the family are seeking to move away from their home as they feel under threat. ‘We have received racist and hate mails in the aftermath of the killing – now, we don’t open any mail that we can’t verify,’ he said.a group of people standing in front of a building: Gardai have since confirmed that the family have received hate mail from an unknown source. ‘The family needs to move home for a lot of reasons.’ Mr Nkencho added: ‘The Garda bullet holes in our front windows are still there.’

Following the incident at the shop on the day of his death, George Nkencho was reported to gardaí, who followed him as he carried the knife on his walk back to his house at Manorfields Drive, Clonee, in Dublin 15. George was engaged with by gardaí, in stages, as he travelled on foot and was told to drop the knife but did not.

The Garda Armed Support Unit attempted to restrain Mr Nkencho outside his home, using pepper spray and deploying Taser while his family were inside. He was then fatally wounded by gardaí, who fired at him.

The killing prompted protests outside Garda stations, with some alleging there was a racial element involved. Mr Nkencho said: ‘We need justice. Justice has no colour, no race. Justice breeds peace. Justice is for all [the] human race. The shooting and killing of George is not felt and addressed only by my family but by all.’
