Kinahan‘s involvement at the top level of the professional sport continues to be scrutinised in the media, but not so much in boxing circles that matter, as he remains active nonetheless.

Kinahan and his former company MTK are operating in the upper echelons of the professional game, but young amateurs ready to make the step-up could be tempted by the lure of professional stables.a man wearing a hat: Daniel Kinahan’s involvement in boxing is ‘desperate’ and ‘detrimental’, amateur boxing club owners around Ireland told Extra.ie. Extra.ie spoke to some amateur gym owners around Ireland, who did not wish to be identified, about the problems which stem from Kinahan in boxing.

Against everything that Kinahan stands for in the sport, the gym owners made it clear that they aren’t necessarily directly affected by his influence as there isn’t money to be made in the amateurs.

Money, though, was the hot topic among the gym owners, who worry about older amateurs who may be keen to progress as professionals and the sport as a whole.Extra.ie spoke to some amateur gym owners around Ireland, who did not wish to be identified out of fear of possible retribution, about the problems which stem from Kinahan in boxing. One owner from the south of Ireland told Extra.ie: ‘It seems to be the next class up.

‘We don’t really have senior boxers. I look at keeping lads until they’re 17 and from there on in they’ll be heading to the bright lights.

Down here you’d hear different yarns. It’s not really affecting us, thanks be to Jesus Christ.Money, though, was the hot topic among the gym owners, who worry about older amateurs who may be keen to progress as professionals and the sport as a whole. ‘It is desperate to see. I saw the documentary, I watched it. If you had a good young fella and you saw him going to them, he would be only going away with them for one thing.’

A representative from a gym in Leinster told Extra that Kinahan’s name being associated with boxing is ‘having a detrimental effect’ on the sport.

We’re an amateur club… but we had boxers who did end up as professionals,’ the rep said.a woman taking a selfie: Against everything that Kinahan stands for in the sport, the gym owners made it clear that they aren’t necessarily directly affected by his influence as there isn’t money to be made in the amateurs. ‘As long as we’re able to survive financially, we don’t look for money from any other sources, but I think money has a big part to play in the Kinahans and everyone knows where their money comes from. It’s tainted.’

In the long run, it’s possible, the gym owner said, that participation levels in boxing will be affected as parents are uncomfortable allowing their children to be involved in a sport occupied by alleged criminals.

The behaviour of Kinahan-associated boxers, like Billy Joe Saunders, was also an issue for the sport, as the gym owner added: ‘Recently, the pronouncements by some of the boxers are a disappointment.Billy Joe Saunders et al. wearing costumes: The behaviour of Kinahan-associated boxers, like Billy Joe Saunders was also an issue for the sport, as the gym owner added: ‘Recently, the pronouncements by some of the boxers are a disappointment. ‘Money seems to be the only thing that matters to them.’

A BBC Panorama documentary, which featured brave testimony by Barry McGuigan, highlighted what is so wrong with boxing at this moment in time.

Despite McGuigan’s condemnation related to Kinahan’s alleged ties to the criminal underworld in Ireland, some of boxing’s biggest names remain on his side.a man jumping in the air: Former world champion Amir Khan spoke out in support of Kinahan recently, while Tyson Fury’s involvement with Kinahan is widely documented. The support within professional boxing for the Dubliner has, meanwhile, been condemned in Ireland by the likes of Tanaiste Leo Varadkar, and local north Dublin councillor Nial Ring.
