Sinn Fein’s Pearse Doherty has slated Stephen Donnelly and the COVID-19 vaccine rollout as he called for the Health Minister to ‘get his act together’.

It comes following news that Ireland’s vaccine allocation will be slashed by 600,000 doses.

Ireland was expected to receive 1.7 million by the end of March.  However, health chiefs have now confirmed that just 1.1 million doses will arrive by the first week of April.

Following news of the vaccine issue, Sinn Fein TD Pearse Doherty has slated the Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly, as he called for him to find more vaccines.

Speaking to RTE’s Today with Claire Byrne, the Donegal TD said that Ireland needs to follow in Austria, Denmark and Germany’s footsteps and source jabs outside of its European allocation.

Mr Doherty said that Minister Donnelly told the Dail last week that he asked Department of Health officials to see if additional vaccines could be sourced.Pearse Doherty wearing a suit and tie: Pearse Doherty said that Stephen Donnelly has to ‘try’ to secure extra vaccines. The Sinn Fein TD said: ‘That means striking deals wherever and whenever we can do them.

‘It may not be possible but we need to at least try. We haven’t tried and that is the big problem.’

Pearse Doherty also added that Stephen Donnelly needs to speak to the British Government to enquire if Ireland can have its excess vaccines when Britons are fully inoculated.

‘We need the Minister for Health to do what the public is looking for him to do,’ the Donegal TD explained.

‘That is do everything in his power.  We’re not saying that there is a silver bullet out there or how we can miraculously whip up extra vaccines, but there are countries that are doing it.

‘Of course [Stephen Donnelly] is not doing this at the moment. It is only last week that he has confirmed that he asked his officials to look beyond what is available in Europe and to mirror what has been happening in Germany, Denmark and Austria.’

Deputy Doherty also slated the issues that GPs are experiencing with their COVID-19 allocation. It comes as a number of doctors across the country report that their deliveries are either not showing up or that they are receiving fewer doses than advised.

He criticised the fact that an IT database was built in ‘six weeks where we should have had six months’ as he noted that the vaccine rollout in Northern Ireland has gone ‘seamlessly’.Stephen Donnelly wearing a suit and tie: Doherty said that Donnelly needs to explain what he is doing to fix supply issues. : Sasko Lazarov/RollingNews.ie© Provided by Extra.ie Doherty said that Donnelly needs to explain what he is doing to fix supply issues. : Sasko Lazarov/RollingNews.ie

Pearse Doherty later added: ‘We can’t change the past.  But what we’re encouraging the Minister to do and trying to pressurise the Minister to do is to get his act together.

‘This is not fair, it is not right. The vaccination programme is really, really important.

‘If Stephen Donnelly wants to show me how he has done what Germany, Austria and Denmark have done, if he wants to show me, or indeed the Dail, as to how he has reached out to other countries to try and secure them, what genuine discussions are happening with the British Government in relation to their excess at a certain point in time, then I’m happy to say that he is doing his best.

‘But he hasn’t done that.’
