Trainee Garda arrested for drug driving ‘on way home from house party’ in Donegal
Gardai launched an internal investigation after a trainee officer was arrested for drug driving – and then claimed a colleague was keeping seized cocaine for himself.
A source said: “It’s a very serious investigation.
“The allegation is that a garda has been seizing small amounts of cocaine and rather than handing it in to the evidence store kept it in his own locker.”
Sources have confirmed that two trainee, or probationer, officers have now been suspended from a station in the north of the country and their phones seized as part of the probe.
It has also emerged that gardai have searched the house of at least one of the officers and the lockers of the two gardai in the station in question to search for cocaine.
It’s understood the investigation began after a trainee officer based in a station in the Garda north-western region was stopped at a checkpoint shortly after midnight on Friday in Donegal town, although he is not based there.
Sources said he was then arrested under suspicion of drug driving – an offence that can carry a €5,000 fine and a six-month jail term, as well as being put off the road for up to four years.
It is understood the young officer then told gardai he had been at a house party in clear contravention of strict Covid-19 rules he was supposed to be enforcing.
Officers went to the house and found a number of people in the property, including another probationer garda who works in the same station as the first trainee.
They searched the house and found what they believed to be cocaine
