Minister McGrath spoke to Louise Byrne on Prime Time about the ongoing COVID-19 situation in Ireland during his appearance on the show.
He was asked about what was going to happen in the short term and whether the Government was resigned to reopening some sectors, like construction, with the knowledge that there will continue to be high case numbers.© Provided by Extra.ie Prime Time viewers fumed online as they said that Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform Michael McGrath failed to answer any question put to him. The Fianna Fail TD continued to speak about the vaccination programme and said he wouldn’t speculate about reopening dates ahead of the current decision date on April 5.
Mr McGrath added that the Government will only examine small movements on restrictions on April 5, which Leo Varadkar has been referencing in recent weeks.
The Minister was asked whether the plan is to have children back in school in full after Easter and while he spoke about the returns that have already happened, he didn’t say for definite whether a return will happen after Easter.© Provided by Extra.ie Minister McGrath spoke to Louise Byrne about the ongoing COVID-19 situation in Ireland during his appearance on the show. He said that the Government hasn’t set a target in terms of the percentage of the population which would need to be vaccinated before businesses could begin to reopen.
He also spoke briefly about Ireland having one of the strictest regimes in Europe when he was asked about the hotel quarantine situation
Viewers at home were less than impressed by what Minister McGrath had to say and many felt that there was no real information given in any of his answers.
One viewer wrote: ‘Why do the ministers not answer a straight question even with an I don’t know but to keep dancing around it.
‘Do they really have any idea of what it’s like trying to stay the course when you don’t know if your small business will survive?
Another said: ‘ Sure he don’t know. None of them know. Same spin all the time. Hope and light with no plan. They all get paid and swan about as they like they can’t understand
‘I can’t even use my own business building for myself and my own mental health.
A third wrote: ‘I’ve never heard such condescending BS from this minister why have him on nothing new here he hasn’t a clue what’s going on
