Minister of State Pippa Hackett and Senators Pauline O’Reilly and Roisin Garvey had tabled a no confidence motion in Ms Chu.

Ms O’Reilly said she believed it wasn’t appropriate for Ms Chu to run as an Independent candidate while chairperson of the Green Party.

She admitted it “has been, and I can’t deny it, quite divisive” for the party and said Ms Chu’s decision to run was one of “self-selecting”.

Ms Chu last night refuted her colleague’s claim.

She said the party selection convention had decided against standing but that it was not preventing any individual from running.

Referring to Ms O’Reilly speaking to RTE’s Claire Byrne show yesterday morning, she added: “If people are unhappy with me I really hope that they would have the respect to come to me and say they are unhappy with me and not go on the airwaves.

“The motion of no confidence put against me – that was challenging, but then, at the end of the day people are entitled to their views.

“If members do not want me as the chairperson, if members think I have broken any rules to not allow me to be a member any more, please put that forward to me and we’ll have a discussion about that.”

Ms Chu said she has “been called a lot of things in the last 48 hours alone” but that she decided to run because she wants a better representation of minority groups in political life.

And she added she is “capable of taking on this role as well”.

She said: “This is not my first time looking to contest something. This, however, is the first time, even though people weren’t 100% behind it, that I decided to go for it.

“Because previously I had been told to step aside, to look for the greater good of the party and not run for elections and at the time I thought, ‘Yes I will, I’m a good soldier and this is what I have to do’.

“At the end of the day there needs to be representation and the party has not explicitly stopped me and I have not broken any rules and that is what I want to do.” It is understood after her poll-topping performance in the local election of 2019, Ms Chu was keen to capitalise on her success and run in the general election in 2020.

However, this would have put her in the same constituency as Eamon Ryan and the Green Party decided on a one candidate strategy.

Party chiefs believed at the time that it was a safer strategy to run one nomination instead of two to avoid splitting the vote.

The Dublin Lord Mayor has faced vile racist abuse as a direct result of her high profile in politics and she has spoken of people even targeting her three -year-old daughter.

And she said she wanted to seek election because she needs to highlight the issue of racism in Irish society.

Ms Chu added: “It’s happening because they are not against my policy, it’s very much because they’re against who I am and also the colour of my skin.

“Unless we as a society can show that people of any colour and any gender in political office is normal and that it is actually what should happen, then things won’t change.”
