Three people abscond from mandatory hotel quarantine

A search is under way after three people left the mandatory hotel quarantine at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Santry in Dublin this afternoon.

It is understood one of the three has been found, but a search for the other two people is continuing.

Gardaí said they are liaising with the Defence Forces representative at the hotel.

In a statement the said: “An Garda Síochána are this afternoon liaising with the State Liaison Officer at a designated quarantine facility in the Dublin area, in accordance with current protocols.

“As the Department of Health are the lead agency in relation to the management of mandatory quarantining, An Garda Síochána will not be commenting further at this time.”

Passengers arriving from 33 designated countries are required to undergo 14 days mandatory quarantine upon arrival in Ireland.

The rules will also apply to any passenger who arrives into the State without the required negative PCR test for Covid-19.

The new quarantine rules came into affect from 4am on Friday and anyone who does not comply can be fined up to €2,000 or face a prison sentence of up to one month.

In a statement, the Department of Health said it is a criminal offence not to fulfil the legal requirement to present for mandatory hotel quarantine.

It said gardaí will investigate any suspected offences.

The cost for an incoming passenger coming from one of 33 designated states is €1,875 for 12 nights.

The day rate for those passengers will be €150.

The General Secretary of the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors, Antoinette Cunningham, said on Twitter that gardaí who are not vaccinated are searching for those who left quarantine, saying those people were in quarantine “because they came from a high risk
