Gardaí seize €5,000 of cocaine and hand out 50 Covid fines in raid on Dublin house party with marquee and DJ

13TH April 2021

Gardaí issued 50 fines for Covid breaches and seized around €5,000 worth of cocaine after raiding a Dublin house party over the weekend.

At least 30 gardaí, including members of the public order unit, were involved in the operation in Drimnagh on Friday night.

After raiding the house they found a marquee set up in the back garden of the property along with a fully-equipped DJ set-up.

Gardaí had obtained a warrant to search the home after receiving information about the large gathering for a birthday party.

It is understood that around 50 on-the-spot fines of €150 were issued to those at the event for breaches of Covid-19 regulations.

A €500 fine was also issued to a woman present for allegedly organising the event, in breach of the Health Act.

During the search of the house cocaine, with an estimated street value of €5,000, was also recovered and seized for analysis.

In a marquee set up on the property a large number of empty laughing gas canisters were also found by officers.

The canisters contain nitrous oxide, also known as ‘hippy crack’ or ‘laughing gas’, and provide a brief high after being inhaled.

They are sold for as little as €1 a canister.

A number of discarded disposable mobile phones were also found at the scene.

Investigations into the gathering are ongoing.

The rate of Covid-19 cases per population in the Rathmines-Kimmage area, which includes Drimnagh, is currently 257.8 per 100,000 people, higher than the national average of 157.1 per capita.

A walk-in test centre has also been set up at the nearby Crumlin GAA club at Lorcan O’Toole Park.

The temporary centres, set up in different parts of the country, were established to actively seek out unknown Covid cases in the community.

As of last Thursday, gardaí had issued 3,341 fines for people attending or organising house parties across the country.

This includes 675 fines of €500 for organising such an event, and 2,666 fines of €150 for attending a house party.

Gardaí are continuing to find groups of large gatherings such as house parties and exercise, with instances of up to 40 people together.
