Rebecca Saunders moved to Ireland in 2004 to study in Cork where she eventually met, married and had a baby girl, Clarissa, with Martin McCarthy.
When Clarissa was just three years old, her dad drowned her in a murder suicide near their home in west Cork.https://platform.twitter.com/embed/Tweet.html?dnt=false&embedId=twitter-widget-0&features=eyJ0ZndfZXhwZXJpbWVudHNfY29va2llX2V4cGlyYXRpb24iOnsiYnVja2V0IjoxMjA5NjAwLCJ2ZXJzaW9uIjpudWxsfSwidGZ3X2hvcml6b25fdHdlZXRfZW1iZWRfOTU1NSI6eyJidWNrZXQiOiJodGUiLCJ2ZXJzaW9uIjpudWxsfX0%3D&frame=false&hideCard=false&hideThread=false&id=1384272483864367104&lang=en&origin=https%3A%2F%2Fextra.ie%2F2021%2F04%2F20%2Fnews%2Firish-news%2Fmum-girl-murdered-by-dad&sessionId=b38a31b4ecb2392432075a096f91d577cd4e3c7a&theme=light&widgetsVersion=ff2e7cf%3A1618526400629&width=550px
When it came time to lay Clarissa to rest, Ms Saunders said she could not bear the thought of her daughter being cremated or buried alone, and amid the shock and grief of the situation, Clarissa was buried with McCarthy.
It is a decision which Ms Saunders now wishes to change as she explained to Claire Byrne on RTE One on Monday evening.
She said: ‘I remember when Clarissa got back from her post mortem and her coffin was open. I just remember always wanting to be by her side and wanting to crawl into that coffin with her.© Provided by Extra.ie The American mum of a young girl who was murdered by her dad in Ireland in 2013 now wants to take her daughter to be buried in the US. ‘I could not believe was in front of my eyes and what had just happened and how fast everything was going.
‘I did not realise just how sinister Martin’s plan was and how much in advance he planned out what he carried out that night.
‘And so I thought to myself; if she had a choice, she would want to be buried with her father, even though he did what he did, as she would still love him.
‘While I understand the reasons why I decided what I had decided eight years ago, certain circumstances were brought to light that made me realise just how involved Martin’s plan was.’
She went on to say that burying them together was a ‘huge mistake’ and explained that she wishes to have Clarissa’s remains exhumed and buried in the US.
‘I feel like I essentially abandoned her because I’m not there anymore,’ she said, ‘and the grave where she’s buried and how she’s buried and who she’s buried with just gives me a great deal of stress.https://
‘I would sleep better, I would be able to function better if I was able to take her home with me.
‘There will be some small amount of closure that I no longer have to think that she’s in the arms of that monster.’
