Joshua Allen, 20, did not have to attend at Midleton District Court as the court was only fixing a date for the hearing of his case.

Mr Allen is charged that on July 10, 2020 at the Pontoon, Midleton, County Cork he had unlawfully in his possession a controlled drug, namely cocaine contrary to the Misuse of Drugs Act.

Mr Allen, of Ballinamona in Shanagarry, Co Cork, will be entering a not guilty plea when he is arraigned in the East Cork court on May 13th next.Rachel Allen smiling for the camera: Joshua Allen is the son of celebrity chef Rachel Allen. Allen will be required to attend that hearing.

However, the Irish Independent reports the court was told Mr Allen intends to strongly contest the single charge.

Defence solicitor, Don Ryan, confirmed to the court that his client will be pleading not guilty and vehemently contesting the allegation.a woman reading a book: Rachel Allen signing her book, ‘Home Cooking’. Pic: REX© Provided by Evoke.ie Rachel Allen signing her book, ‘Home Cooking’. Pic: REX

It is believed the defence will argue the charge has arisen as a result of a case of mistaken identity.

The court was also told that amongst the defence witnesses will be an engineer.

When Judge Gabbet asked why that kind of expert evidence would be involved in a case brought under the Misuse of Drugs Act he was told he would be showing just how dark it was on the night of the arrest.
