The officers involved in the shooting of George Nkencho should face a public trial, it has been claimed.

Former TD Ruth Coppinger said a court case similar to the one against American police officer Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd in America should take place.

Mr Nkencho, 27, was shot dead by gardai outside his home in December following an incident at a local shop.

He was shot multiple times by armed gardai by in Clonee, Co Meath, where he was allegedly brandishing a knife and threatening officers.

Mr Nkencho was believed to be dealing with mental health issues at the time.

Speaking just days after Derek Chauvin was found guilty of murder, Ms Coppinger said she believes it is important that the death of Mr Nkencho’s is openly dealt with.

She added: “Things are at a different stage in the US and in Ireland in terms of the police and black and minority communities.

“I think the hope of the people I have spoken to, black people in Ireland, would be that we don’t reach the situation that it has reached there.

“In fact when this happened a load of people said we don’t want to go like America. We don’t want it to get to a situation where the police are routinely mistreating black people.

“That’s why I think the investigation into George Nkencho’s killing is extremely important and that it’s conducted properly and with due care because it has repercussions for the future.

“There was a proper investigation and an excellent trial done for Derek Chauvin in my opinion because of the protest movement that took place and because the eyes of the world were on it.

“This is why we are trying to ensure that it is a thorough and public investigation .

The former TD said a recommendation as to how the incident will be proceeded with “could come out any day now”, adding: “There should be a trial in my opinion.”

She added: “There should be, but if the Garda Ombudsman recommends that it was self-defence or something and there isn’t a case to answer I think that will be a huge disservice to the family and the person who died. I think it needs to be in public and not a private investigation.”
