The national body of local and city Councillors will say they cannot support Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien’s Land Development Agency on Tuesday.

Association of Irish Local Government (AIGL) President Mary Hoade, who is also a Fianna Fail Councillors, will tell the Oireachtas Housing Committee that the AILG ‘can never support or accept’ the Minister’s Land Development Agency Bill in its current state.

The LDA is a state sponsored body that was created to ‘coordinate lands within state control for more optimal uses’.

However, Ms Hoade’s opening statement to the Housing Committee, seen by Extra.ie, says the AILG are concerned at the Bill.

AILG and our members are concerned that the bill, in its proposed form will lead to the curbing of some of the reserved functions of Councillors particularly in relation to section 56 of the bill which proposes to remove Section 183 of our members in relation to the disposal of local authority owned land,’ the Galway Councillor’s statement read.a man wearing a suit and tie: It comes as Minister O’Brien admitted to investing €30,000 in a so-called ‘cuckoo’ fund. ‘The Association is concerned that this will result in the transfer of local authority land to a centralised agency, unaccountable to the local public representatives.’

‘As a national representative body we can never support or accept any removal of reserved functions and powers from our Elected Members and we would ask that this section of the bill be removed,’ Ms Hoade will tell the Committee on Tuesday.

The AILG is proposing 14 amendments to the LDA Bill.a man wearing a suit and tie: The Irish Mail on Sunday revealed at the weekend that Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien was an early investor in ‘cuckoo’ funds. It comes as Minister O’Brien admitted to investing €30,000 in a so-called ‘cuckoo’ fund.

This type of fund has caused controversy of late after it emerged that a Rea Estate Investment Trust (REIT) bought up the bulk of units on a Kildare Housing Estate.
