It was confirmed last week that Ms Anderson and fellow Sinn Fein MLA Karen Mullan would not contest the Northern Ireland Assembly elections next year.

The decision came following a review of the party’s structure and its election performance in Derry in recent times.Martina Anderson wearing glasses and smiling at the camera: The family of ousted Derry MLA for Sinn Fein, Martina Anderson claimed that the party ‘used’ her as a ‘sacrificial lamb’ to win support. In response to the situation which will see Ms Anderson and Ms Mullan remain out of the next election, Ms Anderson’s family posted a statement on Facebook which began with ‘Breaking the silence’.

It read: ‘We the Anderson Family in Derry have not commented on the brutal way that our loving sister Martina Anderson MLA has been publicly humiliated and asked to stand down by Sinn Féin, a party she loves and has helped to build.

‘Martina asked all of us to stay away from social media and not to comment on the events that have crushed her. As a family we have done as she has asked and we have maintained our silence and our dignity.’Martina Anderson holding a sign: It was confirmed last week that Ms Anderson and fellow Sinn Fein MLA Karen Mullan would not contest the Northern Ireland Assembly elections next year. The statement read that the family wasn’t ‘undermining’ their ‘republican integrity’ by highlighting the issues with her removal from the Sinn Fein leadership structure in Derry.

‘We believe Martina and Karen are being sacrificed by the party, used by this SF leadership because Martina and Karen are the public face and are being castigated in an attempt to win back support,’ the statement continued.

‘Those who thought up that strategy could well see it backfire as the people of Derry do not like to see injustices being inflicted on anyone and as a family we do not believe that using a life long Republican as a sacrificial lamb will win back the hearts and minds of republicans in Derry.Lynn Boylan, Liadh Ní Riada, Martina Anderson, Matt Carthy posing for a photo: The decision came following a review of the party’s structure and its election performance in Derry in recent times. We Anderson’s believe if Martin Mc Guinness had been alive he would never have allowed this disgraceful tactic to be deployed. Martina had the privilege of being his junior minister. He knew her well and valued her worth.’

The piece concluded: ‘We are SF members and as republicans we must demonstrate that we live by our values of equality, respect and integrity – qualities that it pains us to say have been lacking in the treatment of our sister Martina and Karen Mullan.’

When asked for a response to the Anderson family statement, a Sinn Fein spokesperson told Extra.ie: ‘Sinn Fein carried out a party review in the Foyle constituency.a close up of Martina Anderson: The piece concluded: ‘We are SF members and as republicans we must demonstrate that we live by our values of equality, respect and integrity – qualities that it pains us to say have been lacking in the treatment of our sister Martina and Karen Mullan.’ Pic: Leah Farrell/RollingNews.ie© Provided by Extra.ie The piece concluded: ‘We are SF members and as republicans we must demonstrate that we live by our values of equality, respect and integrity – qualities that it pains us to say have been lacking in the treatment of our sister Martina and Karen Mullan.’ Pic: Leah Farrell/RollingNews.ie

An electoral strategy group is now overseeing preparations for the Assembly elections.

‘Karen Mullan and Martina Anderson have indicated that they will not be running again for re-election.’
