A man suspected of involvement in a gangland murder plot is being questioned after gardaí seized nearly €200,000 worth of cash.

Detectives carried out a number of searches in Dublin’s inner city yesterday morning as part of an ongoing investigation into organised crime.

Four separate locations were raided with cash valued at over €188,000 recovered during the search of one property.

Gardaí suspect the significant cash sum is linked to the Kinahan cartel and investigations are ongoing.

Three men, aged in their 30s and 40s, have also been arrested and are currently being held under organised crime legislation.

The  Watchers has learned that one of the men is suspected of involvement in a foiled murder plot and is currently before the courts.

The nature of the offence cannot be outlined for legal reasons.

Gardaí believe the man is an associate of the Kinahan cartel based in Dublin’s city centre.

Two close associates of the suspect are also in garda custody under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007.

The trio can be held for a period of up to seven days before they must either be charged or released from custody pending a file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

They are being questioned in relation to involvement with and assisting an organised crime gang.

A senior source said the seizure and arrests are highly significant as part of the gardaí’s ongoing investigation into serious crime.

“The arrests in this case are highly significant as part of inquiries into a major network and the amount of money seized is also substantial.

“One of those in custody is suspected of being an associate of the Kinahan cartel in Dublin who is still operational despite facing serious charges.”

Gardaí announced details of the operation yesterday and said that the men are being held at separate garda stations.

They said the operation was led by members of the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau (GNDOCB).

The GNDOCB were supported by the Special Crime Task Force and the Garda Dog Unit.

“During the course of the search, cash to the value of €188,295 was located and seized. Three men (aged 36, 38 and 40) were arrested for offences contrary to Sections 71A and 72 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2006.

“All three men are currently detained under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2007 in Irishtown and Store Street Garda stations.

“Investigations are ongoing,” a garda spokeswoman said.
