Huge discontentment has arisen over national and international investment funds, or ‘cuckoo funds’, snapping up large swathes of housing to rent out.

As housing prices and rent continue to climb to sky-high levels, the programme spoke to young people across the country who have despaired over the current situation.a man wearing a suit and tie: Viewers were unimpressed with Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien on RTÉ Prime Time this week. A single mother, who had to speak from her car away from the ears of her children, said she was thinking of making the difficult decision of moving to Donegal as she can’t afford Dublin rental prices.

Another mother said she had two children in their 30s who were still living at home so they could afford to save for a home.

The Minister said that the Government was taking a ‘crisis’ in housing ‘very seriously’.a tall brick building: A single mother, who had to speak from her car away from the ears of her children, said she was thinking of making the difficult decision of moving to Donegal as she can’t afford Dublin rental prices. As Minister I am on the side of the first time buyer — we will bring forward measures to ensure that bulk sales of homes are curtailed as best as possible,’ Mr O’Brien told RTÉ’s Prime Time.

He said that investment funds should ‘add to supply not take away from it’ and that he is working on legislation with Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe to tackle the issue.

Later on, he said that the Government will ensure that ‘generation rent have a real hope now to own their own home’.a man wearing a suit and tie: As housing prices and rent continue to climb to sky-high levels, the programme spoke to young people across the country who have despaired over the current situation. However, viewers took to social media to air their frustration over the interview with one disillusioned Twitter user claiming the Minister saw the Irish population ‘as mugs’ a man wearing a suit and tie: ‘As Minister I am on the side of the first time buyer — we will bring forward measures to ensure that bulk sales of homes are curtailed as best as possible,’ Mr O’Brien told RTÉ’s Prime Time.
