A MAN wanted over the murder of Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch’s nephew Gareth is due to be extradited to Ireland this summer.
McConnell lost the first stage of his battle against the extradition. But he has now appealed the decision to the Supreme Court in Istanbul.
McConnell — currently being held at a prison in the city of Izmir — is expected to receive the court’s ruling over the coming weeks.
But gardai are confident the Turkish court will soon sanction O’Connell’s extradition to Ireland.
If extradited, he will appear in court charged with the murder of the dad-of-one on May 24, 2016.
Gareth Hutch was shot dead in broad daylight outside his home at the Avondale House Flats in the north inner city as he walked to his car.
Siblings Jonathan and Regina Keogh, along with their pal Thomas Fox, are all serving life for the ninth murder of the deadly feud.
One source said: “This matter should be resolved over the coming weeks and it’s hoped McConnell will soon be appearing in court.
“Things are a bit slower now because of the pandemic but the final decision is expected to be made soon enough.
“Every indication has been made that O’Connell will soon be extradited to Ireland.”
Once confirmed, McConnell will be sent back to Ireland with members of the Garda Extradition Unit from the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
Officers from the team are expected to fly to Turkey to bring O’Connell back.
He fled Ireland shortly after Hutch’s murder and has also spent time in Dubai.
McConnell was arrested in Kusadasi in Turkey in July 2020 after a European Arrest Warrant was issued.
Although arrested in a non- European Union country, Interpol were involved in his arrest on the basis of “mutual assistance”.
Our revelations come as members of the Hutch family remembered the father-of-one on the fifth anniversary of his murder.
In a message posted on Facebook, Gareth’s sister Amy said: “5 years gone today brother. Think of you everyday.
“We miss you endless Garth.
