The veteran broadcaster took Deputy O’Broin to task after it was revealed that Sinn Fein had made fake ID cards for members who then posed as pollsters to gather information, which could be useful in elections.

The ‘pollsters’ did not reveal themselves as working for the party, instead as working for the Irish Market Research Agency (IMRA), according to reports.Pat Kenny wearing a suit and tie: Pat Kenny lashed out at Sinn Fein TD Eoin O Broin after revelations on Wednesday that the party had members pose as pollsters. Deputy O’Broin was the first member of the party to comment on the issue while speaking to Pat Kenny on Newstalk on Wednesday morning.

Pat described the story as ‘deception, pure and simple’, to which Mr O’Broin said: ‘I don’t accept that, Pat. In fact, informal polling by political parties, particularly the larger political parties, has been going on for years.

‘When we started doing this back in 2010, it would have been a very small party, with very limited resources, trying to compete with the bigger parties who were able to pay professional polling companies.Eoin Ó Broin wearing glasses and looking at the camera: The veteran broadcaster took Deputy O Broin to task after it was revealed that the party had made fake ID cards for members who then posed as pollsters to gather information useful in elections. ‘So it was the only way parties like ours was able to do polling.’

Pat interrupted and soon took the TD to task, as he said: ‘Hang on a second, no, no, no, no, no. I can’t allow you to get away with that.

‘Sinn Fein in Northern Ireland have had massive amounts of money to spend on elections, so calling this an excuse — it’s the poor mouth as an excuse for deception — it is deception.Eoin Ó Broin wearing glasses: The ‘pollsters’ did not reveal themselves as working for the party, instead as working for the Irish Market Research Agency (IMRA), according to reports. ‘Eoin you cannot say what this document has described is anything other than deception, it’s quite clear. Polls belonging to the IMRA, a fake company based in Dublin. That’s deception pure and simple.’

Mr O’Broin argued that money made by Sinn Fein in Northern Ireland can’t be used in the Republic for elections, and added that Sinn Fein was trying to ‘level the playing field’ by its activities.

‘It is very common,’ he continued, ‘and you can see from the larger political parties that they tacitly acknowledge that they do similar things.’Eoin Ó Broin wearing glasses and looking at the camera: Pat described the story as ‘deception, pure and simple’, to which Mr O Broin said: ‘I don’t accept that, Pat. Although Mr O’Broin claimed this was normal practice, Pat continued: ‘They’re wearing fake badges that belong to IMRA.

‘This is fakery. There’s no excuse you can make that says you’re leveling the playing field. You’re actually getting people to pretend to be something they are not.’

Mr O’Broin added that the data collected is used in the same way all polling data is, as he said: ‘Thankfully, now that we are a larger party we are able to employ professional polling companies, we don’t have to do this kind of activity anymore.Pat Kenny wearing a suit and tie: Pat interrupted and soon took the TD to task, as he said: ‘Hang on a second, no, no, no, no, no. ‘But it is very, very commonplace, Pat. It has been around for a very, very long period of time and I don’t accept that it’s deception.’

Pat goes on to say: ‘I’m just baffled at your effrontery to be quite honest, that you’re pretending this is normal, sending your people out disguised as something that they are not. Where’s the ethical framework for this?’

O’Broin said it is not unethical and it is ‘standard practice’ which has been done by other parties.Pat Kenny wearing a suit and tie: Although Mr O Broin claimed this was normal practise, Pat continued: ‘They’re wearing fake badges that belong to IMRA. Pat suggested Sinn Fein is on a ‘slippery slope’ sending out the message to the people that they are not to be trusted.

Fianna Fail TD, Marc MacSharry said he believes Gardai should be involved in investigating the party, which he said engaged in ‘subversion’ of voters.a man wearing glasses: O Broin said it is not unethical and it is ‘standard practice’ which has been done by other parties. Speaking on Newstalk Breakfast, he said: ‘This amounts to basic subversion of the public. The provision of fake IDs to proscribe what lies people say on behalf of a political party is not normal political behaviour and I think the Gardaí should be consulted quite frankly on it.

‘I think when we have proof now of a 77-page manual telling, encouraging and training personnel how to lie, providing them with fake official documents or would-be official documents, I think, it says a great deal about the organisation.

‘It is extremely worrying and I don’t know anybody involved in politics up to now, who would have engaged in such subversion in the modern democratic world.’
