On Monday, the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) recommended that only those who have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 should be allowed to dine indoors over the coming weeks amid fears about the spread of the Delta variant in Ireland.

The Cabinet sub-committee on COVID-19 held talks until the early hours of Tuesday morning in a bid to devise a viable means of implementing this advice, which will be debated by the Cabinet in full in the coming hours.a group of people drinking wine: The Cabinet is due to meet on Tuesday to consider the proposed restriction of indoor dining services to those who have been fully vaccinated, a plan that has sparked widespread criticism online.© Provided by Extra.ie The Cabinet is due to meet on Tuesday to consider the proposed restriction of indoor dining services to those who have been fully vaccinated, a plan that has sparked widespread criticism online.

If approved, the scheme would see the reopening of indoor dining delayed for a few weeks beyond July 5 in order to work out the precise details of the new system, which poses myriad logistical and legal challenges.

On Monday night, NPHET brought stark words of warning to the Government regarding the spread of the Delta variant, including a worst-case scenario projection that would see more than 2,000 deaths related to COVID-19 occurring before September, as well as hundreds of thousands of cases.

The proposal has been met with widespread criticism online, as former Fine Gael TD Noel Rock wrote: ‘Hmmm. The generation that was statistically least at risk, gave up as much as everyone, now gets to return to normal last?a man wearing a suit and tie: On Monday, the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) recommended that only those who have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 should be allowed to dine indoors over the coming weeks amid fears about the spread of the Delta variant in Ireland. ‘Many will be ok about it, me included, but it wasn’t really “the deal” at the start (“all in this together”). Sounds like a recipe for mass disobedience.’

Mr Rock continued: ‘The idea that only vaccinated people can dine or drink indoors is outrageous. Younger people sacrificed college, work, ability to take driving tests and nearly every rite of passage to keep everyone safe. It was “all in this together”. But now it’s a two speed restoration.’

The hashtag #DisbandNPHET also began trending on Twitter, as one tweet read: ‘NPHET predicting 1,000 cases a day by the end of July if indoor hospitality opens next week. Have any other EU Country experienced this rise in cases since opening indoors?a hand holding a small pair of scissors: If approved, the scheme would see the reopening of indoor dining delayed for a few weeks beyond July 5 in order to work out the precise details of the new system, which poses myriad logistical and legal challenges. ‘NO! Have Ireland experienced this rise in cases since opening hotel bars & restaurants? NO! #DisbandNPHET’.

Another social media user opined: ‘Those involved in hospitality have been in a state of constant stress and worry for the past 13 months and it now looks set to continue.
