Minister Donnelly was grilled by Mr Kenny about all things COVID-19 including the use of antigen tests, passes for indoor dining, international travel and the time it takes Government to get its measures over the line.

While questioning Minister Donnelly about why Irish health authorities are so against the use of antigen testing, Pat asked what the point of the outdoor pilot gigs in the Iveagh Gardens were if testing wasn’t taking place.Stephen Donnelly wearing a suit and tie: Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly said he ‘doesn’t know’ what the point of the Iveagh Gardens pilot gig as Pat Kenny ‘tore strips’ off him. Speaking on his Newstalk programme, Pat asked: ‘What did you learn from the Iveagh Gardens exercise?’

In a stumbling response, Minister Donnelly said: ‘I’m not sure, I haven’t seen that.’

Pat quipped back: ‘The answer is nothing. Because you didn’t test anybody, so what was the point in that exercise exactly?’Stephen Donnelly wearing a suit and tie: Minister Donnelly was grilled by Mr Kenny about all things COVID-19 including the use of antigen tests, passes for indoor dining, international travel and the time it takes Government to get its measures over the line. Again, Mr Donnelly hesitated and then said: ‘Pat, the pilot in the Iveagh Gardens is nothing to do with health.’

In response, Pat continued: ‘It was certainly nothing to do with running gigs because 500 people were in a huge space , so it had to be do with health, it certainly wasn’t anything to do with mass entertainment — the masses were not there.’

Finishing off the point, Mr Donnelly added: ‘The choices for use of antigen testing are choices for line ministers. What I can do is provide the expertise.Stephen Donnelly wearing a suit and tie: While questioning Minister Donnelly about why Irish health authorities are so against the use of antigen testing, Pat asked what the point of the outdoor pilot gigs in the Iveagh Gardens were if testing wasn’t taking place. ‘Catherine Martin and I are, for example, working on a rapid testing pilot in the coming days and obviously, we’ll be looking at the results of that very closely.’

Listeners were frustrated by the Minister’s performance during the piece, as one tweeted: ‘Stephen Donnelly just admitted he “doesn’t know” what the point in the Iveagh Gardens joke of a gig was. You’d almost be shocked.

Another wrote: ”Looking at’… ‘We can do more, we should do more’. “What have you learned from the pilot in Iveagh Gardens?” “….”

‘More pilots re antigen testing, seriously? Come on, Stephen Donnelly.
