WELL-KNOWN Dutch crime journalist Peter R. de Vries was gunned down on the streets of Amsterdam this evening in a gangland-style attack.

De Vries, one of the Netherlands’ most-respected investigative journalists, had just left a nearby TV studio in the centre of the city when he was shot as he walked to his car.

According to unconfirmed reports, the 64-year-old was shot in the head at close range by a lone gunman.

Several bystanders approached DeVries as he lay motionless in the street while emergency services were called.

The journalist was taken to hospital with serious injuries, although no further information is known about his condition.

Police have launched a massive manhunt for the suspect, who they describe as a small man of slender build who was wearing a dark green coat with camouflage patches and a black cap.

“The victim who was shot on Lange Leidsedwarsstreet was taken to hospital in critical condition,” Amsterdam police said in a statement.

De Vries is one of the most well-known journalists in the Netherlands and has worked on numerous high-profile cases, including the disappearance of Natalee Holloway and the kidnapping of Freddy Heineken.
