Raheem Sterling won a late penalty for Gareth Southgate’s side but subsequent replays showed that the Manchester City forward received very little contract to go down.
England are now through for their first major tournament final since 1966 and they were given a big boost before kick-off with a message from the Fine Gael TD.

‘Good luck to England tonight,’ Coveney wrote. ‘Best team in tournament so far, we wish our neighbours well!’
England will have one more day out at this summer’s European Championship against Italy on Sunday, and we’ll be keeping an eye out to see who the Fine Gael TD will be supporting then.
