Sinn Fein TD for Dublin Bay South, Chris Andrews, warned that the presence of rats in accommodation operated by DCC was a health issue.

He said that there are a number of aspects that are attracting rodents to the flats and it all stems from a lack of maintenance in a number of areas across many complexes.a rodent looking at the camera: Rat infestations across Dublin City Council (DCC) flat complexes are as a result of council ‘neglect’ in maintaining the flats, a TD said. Speaking on Newstalk Breakfast on Tuesday, he said: ‘It’s a public health issue and it affects thousands of families right across the inner city. Almost every flat complex across Dublin has issues with rats.

‘You have families living side-by-side with rats and children playing in the same area, it really needs to be addressed.

‘There are a variety of issues that cause it and it’s hugely upsetting for families, young and old.’Chris Andrews wearing a suit and tie: Sinn Fein TD for Dublin Bay South, Chris Andrews, warned that the presence of rats in accommodation operated by DCC was a health issue. Explaining why rats are attracted to the flats, he continued: ‘What’s causing it is poor bin storage areas, they’re not adequately housed, the big container bins and they’re not cleaned or maintained properly.

‘The drains are damaged, the underground drains, so they’re housing nests of the rats.

‘Some of the forecourt areas are housing rats. The flats of older people, the ground floor flats, are not being kept. Breeding areas need to be treated and there is a lot of illegal dumping as well — people coming from outside the flats driving in and dumping.’Chris Andrews wearing a suit and tie: He said that there are a number of aspects which are attracting to rodents to the flats and it all stems from a lack of maintenance in a number of areas across many complexes. Explaining the role of the council in this issue, Mr Andrews said: ‘What it is, in my view, is a question of neglect.

‘Dublin City Council have neglected the residents and tenants of flats complexes of the housing that it owns.

‘It’s something that is neglect. It wouldn’t happen if it was down in Sandymount or Rathgar in a private apartment.’Chris Andrews et al. standing in front of a crowd posing for the camera: Speaking on Newstalk Breakfast on Tuesday, he said: ‘It’s a public health issue and it affects thousands of families right across the inner city. When challenged that rat infestation wouldn’t happen in more affluent areas because it would be dealt with by private owners, Mr Andrews pointed out that residents in DCC housing have no other choice but to rely on the council for maintenance.

‘Dublin City Council are the landlord. They’re responsible for the upkeep of the flat complexes across the city,’ he said.

The residents themselves are not allowed put down rat poison. The council will not allow them treat… they’re not allowed to change or upgrade the bin storage area.Chris Andrews, Mary Lou McDonald are posing for a picture: Explaining why rats are attracted to the flats, the continued: ‘What’s causing it is poor bin storage areas, they’re not adequately housed, the big container bins and they’re not cleaned or maintained properly. ‘So the council, on one hand, will not allow residents do what’s needed to be done and will not do it themselves. So it’s not a fair comparison.’

Extra.ie has contacted Dublin City Council for a response on the claims of neglect across its flat complexes.
