Senior gardai have launched a high-level review into a security breach in which the Taoiseach was confronted by a protester while sitting in a State car.

The Irish Mirror can reveal the incident happened in the early hours of July 15 outside the Convention Centre in Dublin, where the Dail is sitting due to Covid-19.

Micheal Martin was in the back seat of the State car, a 192 Lexus, outside the Convention Centre afterwards when a woman pulled open the door and confronted him.

However, we have learned up to 20 hours in advance of the incident, gardai at local level at a city centre station were warned of a possible disturbance to the Taoiseach being planned by protesters.

It is understood that it was also mooted the protesters had wanted to pull him from the car.

But the woman who made the security breach only shouted at the Fianna Fail leader.

Assistant Commissioner of the Dublin Metropolitan Region Anne Marie Cagney is now heading an investigation over the serious lapse in security.

But as part of the probe, it will try to establish why security around the Taoiseach was not increased after receiving the warning.

A source said: “This is a very serious breach involving the head of government.

“Luckily the incident itself was not as serious as it could have been.

“But senior gardai are now trying to establish the facts surrounding it.”

On the night of July 14, hundreds of people protested outside the Convention Centre over the Government’s response to Covid-19.

Those gathered included some anti-mask and anti-vaccination demonstrators.

The gardai’s policing plan involved regular garda units but the Public Order Unit was not deployed.

There were rolling road closures in place to facilitate the safe movement of those involved and management of traffic.

One woman in her 30s was arrested and charged for public order offences, but this did not relate to the incident involving the Taoiseach which occurred after 12am into the morning of July 15.Ireland's Prime Minister (Taoiseach) Micheal Martin. Gardai previously said: “In supporting the Covid-19 public health guidelines and regulations, An Garda Siochana has and will continue to adopt a graduated policing response based on its tradition of policing by consent.

“This has seen gardai engage, educate, encourage and, as a last resort, enforce.

“Any Garda activity in relation to evolving events is in line with this graduated policing response taking into account public health regulations and advice.”

Garda Headquarters were contacted for a comment.

Last September, Tanaiste Leo Varadkar was targeted with a smoothie while filming a video in Merrion Square.

Earlier this summer, it emerged the young woman responsible would not be charged over the incident.
