Gardaí are investigating a gathering of at least 38 people at Independent TD Danny Healy-Rae’s pub, which took place ten days before indoor hospitality was allowed.

The Kerry TD was pictured smiling as he pulled pints with dozens of people packed into his Kilgarvan bar, just two days after asking Health Minister Stephen Donnelly: ‘Why don’t you trust the publicans?’

Among the crowd was Danny’s brother and fellow TD, Michael. Extra.ie revealed that the gathering took place on July 16, with the Healy-Rae family celebrating Danny’s son Patrick’s wedding – several days before indoor hospitality was reopened to fully vaccinated people and those who have recovered from Covid-19.a group of people posing for the camera© Provided by Extra.ie

The revelation came after a video emerged on social media of what’s understood to be an unrelated gathering at Mr Healy-Rae’s bar, where there appeared to be several breaches of the country’s public health guidelines.

When contacted yesterday in relation to the wedding day gathering, Gardaí confirmed that they are carrying out ‘preliminary enquiries into the matter’.

In a statement, a Garda spokesperson said that they were ‘aware of images and video published online appearing to be an indoor gathering in a licensed premises’ but they wouldn’t comment directly on the social media content.

While Gardaí have started looking into the incident, no complaint has been made and no formal investigation has started.

On July 14 – just days before his son’s wedding celebration – the bar owner assured the Health Minister that publicans can ‘run their businesses well’ during a debate on indoor dining legislation.

He told Mr Donnelly to ‘cop on and do the right thing and open it up for everyone. Why don’t you trust the publicans? Why don’t you trust the people that run the small restaurants and indoor cafes? Why don’t you trust those people?’ Mr Healy Rae asked Minister Donnelly.

‘They can keep people apart and they can do like they have always done – run their businesses well.

I think of all those grand people that provided a service back over the years, generations handed down from one to the other… and you won’t trust them to open up like all the other sectors of society.’

Meanwhile, the Independent TD from Kerry faced criticism from Sinn Féin’s Matt Carthy.

‘I know many pubs, hotels and other businesses that have adhered to all the public health advice and have struggled as a result, and many of whom may never open their doors again because of all that they have been through,’ he told reporters yesterday.

‘It would be entirely unfair if when they were doing that, others were breaching the guidelines, and particularly anybody who was in breach of the law.

‘There should be accountability for all of that.’

The Vintners Federation of Ireland said that it expected a ‘significant increase’ in the number of HSE and HSA compliance officers visiting hospitality venues from next week.

‘Some of the guidelines, such as having to check a customer’s vaccine status, are onerous and impractical but these are the rules we must work with for the time being,’ a VFI spokesperson said.

‘Refusing to implement those guidelines could have huge consequences, not just for an individual pub found transgressing, but for the entire trade.’
