Councillor and campaigner Anthony Flynn found dead amid sexual assault probe

Dublin city councillor and homelessness campaigner Anthony Flynn was found dead on Wednesday in tragic circumstances.

Mr Flynn, 35, founded the charity Inner City Helping Homeless (ICHH) in 2013 after working with youth communities in Dublin.

Mr Flynn was suspended from the charity earlier this month following allegations of sexual misconduct.

After news of Mr Flynn’s death broke on Wednesday, a number of politicians and charity groups expressed their sympathies.

Mr Flynn’s Dublin City Council colleague Labour councillor Dermott Lacey said: ‘My deepest sympathies to the family, all at Inner City Helping Homeless and friends of Anthony Flynn at this awful news and sad time. Independent TD for Donegal Thomas Pringle said he was ‘shocked and saddened’ at the news of Mr Flynn’s death.

CEO and founder of Dublin charity Feed Our Homeless, Tony Walsh, said: This is very sad news to hear today of the passing of Anthony.

Women’s charity group Muslim Sisters of Eire said on Facebook: ‘We are shocked and heartbroken. Our sincere condolences to his loved ones. Anthony’s work was so incredible.’

Mr Flynn had been a critic of the Government and Dublin City Council’s housing policy and on Tuesday hit out at Dublin City Council’s chief executive Owen Keegan on social media for comments he made about people sleeping in tents in the city.

It is understood, however, that the death is not being treated as suspicious.

In a statement, gardaí said: ‘The body has been removed from the scene to the mortuary in Whitehall where a post-mortem will take place in due course, the results of which will determine the course of the investigation.

According to reports, Mr Flynn had been interviewed by gardaí in Store Street Garda station as part of an investigation. The gardaí who spoke to Mr Flynn were from the Divisional Protective Services Unit which investigates sexual crimes.

Mr Flynn was not arrested by gardaí.

‘We immediately initiated an investigation and commenced an independent process which we expect recommendations from shortly,’ said Mr Hall.

The board of the ICHH appointed an independent senior counsel to investigate the matter.

‘We are in communication with the Charities Regulator,’ said Mr Hall.
