Councillors call on government to act on ‘new working homelessness’

Hundreds of mourners are expected to pay tribute to homeless advocate and Dublin City Councillor Anthony Flynn as he is laid to rest today.

A private funeral service will be held at 10.30am in The Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, Sean McDermott Street, Dublin.

Following the mass, his funeral cortege will follow the route past the family-run Lloyds Bar and the office of Inner City Helping Homeless.

Neighbours and friends, many who cannot attend the funeral because of Covid-19 guidelines, will line this route before Anthony’s remains will be brought to Dardistown Cemetery.

Last Friday, locals organised a lighting of lanterns in honour of him outside the ICHH offices on Amiens Street.

Mr Flynn had been subject to a Garda investigation into alleged sexual abuse but had never been arrested or charged.

The 34-year-old helped found Inner City Helping Homeless in 2013, a voluntary charity that provides outreach support to rough sleepers in the city centre.

He then became chief executive in 2019 before being suspended earlier this month over the allegations against him.

Following his death, ICHH chair David Hall wrote to staff vowing to continue the work Flynn had started.

It read: “This tragic loss is a source of deep shock to all of us at ICHH. I wish to express my personal sadness and deepest condolences to his family and friends at his passing and I am sure that you are all experiencing the same deep sense of sadness and loss.

“Anthony was a person who passionately cared about the plight of the homeless and fought to give them a voice and a home. He turned that belief into action. 138259054011
