While the Fianna Fáil TD noted that Taoiseach Micheál Martin has acknowledged that texts relating to government business should not be deleted, he shared that the Government leader should also acknowledge the ‘startling information’ contained within the texts.

Reflecting on his own resignation last year, Barry Cowen discussed whether the likes of Leo Varadkar and Simon Coveney should face similar consequences.a man wearing a suit and tie: Former Minister for Agriculture Barry Cowen has called upon the Taoiseach to address the text messages exchanged between Leo Varadkar and Katherine Zappone. Speaking to RTE’s Morning Ireland about the controversy, Barry Cowan said: ‘I do believe it was very poor judgement on the part of everybody at Cabinet to allow this appointment to be put through in the first instance. I’d like to think if I was sitting at that table I would have cried foul.’

The former Minister was asked if there was a feeling that Fine Gael ministers are getting away with more than Fianna Fáil ministers, following both his and Dara Calleary’s resignations last year.

Barry Cowan replied that the issue was ‘something that’s being said within our organisation, and indeed, by members of the public,’ adding that there should be ‘a line drawn under this’ in order to get on with more pressing government business.Micheal Martin wearing a suit and tie: Barry Cowan shared that Micheál Martin should also acknowledge the ‘startling information’ contained within the texts.© Provided by Extra.ie Barry Cowan shared that Micheál Martin should also acknowledge the ‘startling information’ contained within the texts.

He said: ‘Also, what I’d say is, during the issues concerning the matter and the incident for which I was held responsible, I was told that this issue was dominating the public domain and was getting in the way of government business.

‘Some would argue that this is getting in the way of very difficult government business too.’

Asked if he felt the Taoiseach should call upon either Simon Coveney or Leo Varadkar to resign, Barry Cowan said that Micheál Martin should simply ‘acknowledge the content of those texts

The former minister also clarified, regarding his own situation: ‘I didn’t resign, by the way, I was sacked by the Taoiseach.’a man wearing a suit and tie: The former minister also clarified, regarding his own situation: ‘I didn’t resign, by the way, I was sacked by the Taoiseach.’ Pic: RollingNews.ie / Dail Eireann live© Provided by Extra.ie The former minister also clarified, regarding his own situation: ‘I didn’t resign, by the way, I was sacked by the Taoiseach.’ Pic: RollingNews.ie / Dail Eireann live

Asked if the Taoiseach should consider sacking any ministers as a result of the MerrionGate controversy, Mr Cowen simply said: ‘I want the government to get on with the business that it was elected to do.’

Text messages between Leo Varadkar and Katherine Zappone, as well as Simon Coveney, were released by the Tánaiste on Wednesday.

The messages relate to the role of special envoy for freedom of opinion and expression, as well as Ms Zappone’s party at the Merrion Hotel.Leo Varadkar in a suit and tie sitting in a car: Text messages between Leo Varadkar and Katherine Zappone, as well as Simon Coveney, were released by the Tánaiste on Wednesday.© Provided by Extra.ie Text messages between Leo Varadkar and Katherine Zappone, as well as Simon Coveney, were released by the Tánaiste on Wednesday.

Leo Varadkar apologised on Thursday morning for failing to release these text messages sooner, explaining that he was on annual leave when all Freedom of Information act requests were made.
