GERRY ‘The Monk’ Hutch has “settled in well” to his new life at tough Soto del Real prison and is proving to be a model inmate, well-placed Spanish prison sources have revealed.

The Dubliner was nabbed on August 12 at a restaurant near his hideout in the Costa del Sol resort of Fuengirola after gardai issued a European Arrest Warrant for him in April over serious criminal charges relating to the deadly Regency Hotel attack.

The 58-year-old gang boss is sharing a cell in one of the 14 prison wings and makes up one of the 1,057 inmates who currently call the lock-up, officially known as Madrid V, their home.

The €48million jail, a 35-minute drive north of Madrid city centre, was built to house 2,000 prisoners and was officially opened in March 1995 with facilities including a swimming pool, two squash court, basketball courts and gyms.

Officials revealed yesterday Hutch did 10 days quarantine under coronavirus rules in an admissions unit when he first arrived at the prison, and would have been offered a Covid vaccine if he was not already jabbed.

First roll call takes place at 8am, breakfast is an hour later, lunch at 1.15pm and dinner 7.15pm.

Inmates are confined to their cells from 8pm to 8am and between 2.30 and around 4.30pm but most spend the rest of the time elsewhere on the wing in the gym, library, games room or attending workshops.

Hutch is not doing a prison job and cannot access treatment programmes if he wanted to because he is not behind bars as a convicted criminal.

One well-placed source said: “I couldn’t tell you how he is spending his time but he appears to have adapted well to his new surroundings and is abiding by the prison regime.

“The coronavirus pandemic has changed a lot of things and he will have done 10 days quarantine when he entered the jail in an admissions unit and got the offer of the coronavirus vaccine if he wasn’t jabbed.

“Visits have also been affected.

“Private more intimate visits known as vis-a-vis visits with spouses or partners are off-limits at the moment and a maximum of two visitors instead of four are allowed into booths where they speak to inmates on the other side of a screen using a phone.”

FELLOW INMATES

Another insider added: “Hutch is sharing a cell with another inmate.

“He doesn’t have to wear a prison uniform and wears his own clothes.”

The likes of British terrorist Abdel-Majed Abdel Bary are also understood to be at the same jail.

The former rapper, identified as a possible member of a group of former Syrian-based Islamic terrorists known as ‘The Beatles’ because of their British accents, is at the centre of an ongoing court investigation sparked by his arrest at a hideout in the Spanish city of Almeria last year.

Glasgow-born fraudster Michael Brown, the disgraced multi-millionaire who donated £2.4 million to the Liberal Democrats, was incarcerated briefly in April 2012 at Soto del Real after being arrested at his Dominican Republic hideaway and deported to Madrid.
