Principal arrested for allegedly impersonating ‘concerned parent’

 18th September 2021

A school principal has been arrested as part of a major fraud investigation as detectives look into an allegation that he sent a fake document in which he impersonated a “concerned parent” in the school he worked in.

The alleged victim in the case was a male teacher at the same school, who believes that the document was produced with the intention of getting him into “serious disciplinary trouble”, sources have said.

The principal was arrested and taken to a garda station in Co Monaghan, where he was detained overnight before being released without charge.

A file will be prepared for the DPP.

A garda spokeswoman told the Irish Independent yesterday: “I can confirm a man aged in his mid-40s was arrested on the evening of Thursday, September 9, 2021 in relation to a fraud offence and detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at Carrickmacross garda station.

“He was later released without charge and investigations are ongoing.”

Sources have revealed that the teacher who is the alleged victim in the case has made two protected disclosures to two separate education and training boards since the alleged offence occurred in February 2018.

“He felt that the concerns he raised were not being acted upon by either agency, and so he made a formal statement of complaint to gardaí last year,” a source said. “The last three years have been very stressful for him.

“He believes that the principal was definitely trying his best to get him sacked and he lied about him to the school’s board of management.

This led to him missing a considerable amount of work when he went on stress leave.”

Detectives from Carrickmacross garda station began a lengthy investigation after taking a detailed statement from the teacher, which led to the arrest of the principal on Thursday last week.

The Irish Independent attempted to contact the school principal, who is now working in a different school, but calls were not returned.
