Fr Ray Flaherty was on duty at the funeral which was taking place at a cemetery on Athenry Road in Tuam on Wednesday.

A burial was taking place at the cemetery when a mass brawl ensued during which knives, and other weapons, reportedly including a chainsaw, were produced. In the incident, wooden crosses were removed from other graves and used as weapons. The priest who was present at a knife fight which took place at a funeral in Galway earlier this week detailed the horrors at the cemetery.© Provided by Extra.ie The priest who was present at a knife fight which took place at a funeral in Galway earlier this week detailed the horrors at the cemetery.

Seven people were taken to hospital with injuries as a result of the brawl, which left Fr Flaherty terrified. Armed gardai, an army helicopter and several ambulances were called to the scene of the incident.

Reports say the cemetery row broke out as a family was preparing to bury a loved one.

Fr Flaherty has now spoken out about his disappointment that such events occurred on the sacred ground within the cemetery.a close up of a sign: Fr Ray Flaherty was present at the funeral which was taking place at a cemetery on Athenry Road in Tuam on Wednesday. He said that the experience was the worst he had ever encountered in his time as a priest, as dozens of Gardai were called to the scene to quell the violence.

The priest said that members of the family, who were not involved in the row, apologised to him, but he remained horrified by what he saw.

He said that at one point in the brawl, he saw someone using a Stanley blade to attack another person, others fought and wrestled on top of other graves.a man wearing a hat: A burial was taking place at the cemetery when all hell broke loose and a mass brawl ensued during which knives and other weapons, reportedly including a chainsaw, were produced. Speaking to The Sun, Fr Flaherty said: ‘The fear really shook me. But I didn’t just break down about it, I tried to help the gardai, tried to calm things down — but it wasn’t any good, there was no respect.’

After intervention from the gardai, Fr Flaherty said he continued the ceremony, but made it a shorter affair as he was keen to leave as quickly as possible for his own safety.

He added: ‘Life is too short for all of this. I would say to them please sit down, put the hand of friendship out there, work out your differences together. And I would hope maybe somebody would step in.
