Prison bosses are braced for a security nightmare after Gerry “The Monk” Hutch demanded that his wife and son visit him behind bars.

Hutch, 58, has formally requested to see his wife Patricia and one of his sons, as he awaits trial for the gangland murder of Kinahan cartel associate David Byrne.

Up until now it is understood the mobster has had no personal visits and has only seen his legal team since he was locked up in Dublin’s Wheatfield Prison on September 29.

But sources say the Monk has placed the names of his wife and son on his visitation list in recent days.

Their arrival at the prison would present a massive security challenge for the prison and for gardai, who have warned members of the Hutch family of the active threat to their lives.

Several members of the Hutch clan and associates of the Monk have already been warned to steer clear of a visit due to security fears.

However, sources say that prison bosses have conceded that they cannot stop anyone from visiting the Monk as is his right.

A source added: “Gerry has requested to see his wife and he is entitled to do so. Of course this presents with it a number of security concerns and both of them would have been made aware of that.”

Hutch’s wife Patricia has stood by his side ever since he fled Ireland in 2016 – moving between Lanzarote, mainland Spain, Turkey and Holland to evade the ruthless Kinahan cartel which carried out the murder of his brother, two close associates and three nephews.

She also was seen by the Monk’s side as officers from the Guardia Civil monitored his movements in Fuengirola, months after he had fled after allegedly being tipped off about an arrest warrant issued against him.

When officers eventually did lift Hutch at a pizza restaurant, Patricia was again by his side, watching on as her husband was finally arrested.

Now it is understood she wishes to be reunited with him in Wheatfield Prison where he is housed in an area nicknamed “the Hutch Landing”.

Several measures have already been taken to ensure optimum safety for the Monk, to the extent that he is relatively isolated inside the jail.

So far Hutch has not appeared to have taken any steps to apply for bail, although he could mount a case before the High Court if he wishes.

Sources say the infamous figure, who has grown a massive beard behind bars, is so well protected in prison that he might not consider trying for bail for some time.

Consideration has already been made to move a number of prisoners off the “3G” Wing where Hutch is housed, while he has also been placed in a cell that is not visible from the outside to deter the use of drones against him.

Gardai are also understood to be operating round-the-clock surveillance of the prison itself in further efforts to maintain top level security around the crime boss.

When the Monk was brought before the court last month the authorities ensured he only stayed a short time in Portlaoise Prison, where many of his deadliest enemies are jailed, before being whisked away to Wheatfield.
