A HOUSEKEEPER caught stealing groceries from a supermarket told gardaí “sorry” after she was charged, a court heard.

Madeline Birgu (22) was stopped by security staff as she walked out of the supermarket with a trolley full of groceries.

Judge Dermot Dempsey ordered Ms Birgu to donate €200 to St Francis Hospice in Blanchardstown and he said he would apply the probation act.

The defendant, with an address at Shanliss Road, Santry, admitted theft of groceries valued at €170 from Tesco, Holywell Distributor Road in Swords, on October 24, 2020.

Sergeant Patricia McGarrity told Swords District Court that Ms Brigu walked into the supermarket, filled up a trolley and walked out of the shop without paying for them.

Sgt McGarrity said that the defendant was stopped by security staff and the goods were returned in a resalable condition.

Sgt McGarrity said the theft was also caught on CCTV
cameras.

After she was charged with the offence Ms Birgu replied “sorry”, the sergeant said.

The court heard that Ms Birgu had no previous convictions.

Her defence said that Ms Birgu was originally from Romania but had lived in Ireland for three years.
