GARDAI are on a new mission to catch Sophie Toscan du Plantier’s killer.

Commissioner Drew Harris has sanctioned a full-blown review of all existing statements and evidence, and ordered all new leads as a result of two TV documentaries into the horror case to be examined and followed up.

He has assembled a new team with fresh eyes to go through the case files and no resources are being spared to see if they can get a breakthrough.

Most of the detectives and officers who were originally involved in the original murder probe have retired.

It is understood several witnesses including self confessed prime suspect Ian Bailey and his former partner Jules Thomas are likely to be voluntarily re-interviewed.

‘CONFESSIONS’

Bailey claims these so-called confessions were “dark humour“ but many of the witnesses he made the comments to disagree.

A Garda source said: “It is not a cold case review, it is a full blown open criminal investigation, going through all the evidence bit by bit and using modern methods and technology.

“Every little piece of information we ever received is being looked at.

“Obviously the confessions are a part of it and at least two of those witnesses have since died.

“But we also have a blood sample that was never identified and loads of other loose ends including the alibis of various different people.

“Sophie and her family need justice and the people of west Cork deserve to know the truth after living with the stain of this unsolved case for so long.”

Gardai are adamant they will not make any further public comment on the investigation until they have made a significant breakthrough.

The team in charge are knuckling down and quietly going about their business for several weeks now from a new base in Macroom.

The Gardai also refused to say how many detectives are involved but it is believed to be significant.

FREE REIGN

They are being given free reign to let the evidence lead them to the truth and hopefully to Sophie’s killer.

The source added: “Both the Commissioner and our investigators believe they can solve this case.”

Ian Bailey, 64, was arrested twice in February, 1997 and January, 1998 over Sophie’s death but never charged.

He always denied any involvement in the murder.

The then Director of Public Prosecutions in 2001 ruled there wasn’t enough evidence to support the prosecution of Ian Bailey.

The whole investigation effectively went nowhere since although it was technically classed as “open”.

Bailey was found guilty of murder in absentia by a three-Judge French court in 2019 and sentenced to 25 years jail.

The Irish courts have so far refused to extradite him to serve his sentence.
